The Thunder Rolls

"The Thunder Rolls" is a song released by American Country music artist Garth Brooks. It debuted on his second album No Fences and also appears on The Hits, The Limited Series, and Double Live. The song was written by Brooks and Pat Alger. It was originally recorded by Tanya Tucker, but was never released until it appeared on her self-titled 1995 box set. Her version included a third verse which Brooks himself intended to use on his version, but did not at the suggestion of producer, Allen Reynolds.

Background

"The Thunder Rolls" tells the story of a wife waiting up late into the night for her husband. As he comes into the house, she smells another woman's perfume on him. All of this is set against the backdrop of a storm, representing the tribulation of the couple's marriage. The song originally contained a third verse in which the woman runs to her dresser drawer to get a pistol, telling herself that she'll never again wonder where he is. However, producer Allen Reynolds felt it worked well with just two verses and the third verse never appeared on the studio version, although Brooks does sing it at concerts as is evidenced on Double Live. Also, many radio stations across the country refused to play it with the last verse, because it was accused of promoting domestic violence, leading to a double standard in country music.
